Who here is also a fan of RPGs or in full: roleplaying games?

You have many kinds in it, computer games like Elder Scrolls, Neverwinter Nights, Final Fantasy, ... Online computer games or the MMORPGs with the obvious names World of Warcraft, Lineage, ... Then there are the good old table top board games like D&D, Heroquest, ... and of course you can also just have fun in chatrooms roleplaying to your heart's delight.

Personally I've tried all types. Always been a fan of the Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasy games. It's just something about discovering a storyline and advancing in it that's entertaining. Or simply exploring a fantasy world where you can do anything you want.

The online roleplaying games are harder, unfortunately most of them are very popular with kids these days and it's rarely about roleplaying .. more about gaming, killing others and being the best. Luckily enough there are still a few good games out there who encourage roleplaying.

I've played World of Warcraft on some free servers and it was fun, mostly because of my good memories on the older strategy games in the series. I got tired of the game pretty fast though, most you can do is level your character up.
Then I still play Star Wars Galaxies occasionally. It's in my opinion the most extensive an diverse online game world out there. You can do almost anything you want and have a ton of features to discover: from flying in a gunship with a full crew, discovering the Force, exploring hostile planets, creating your own production company to space mining or even calm day of fishing on Naboo.
Another good game I found is Planeshift, which is basically a free game that is still under development but at the same time open to playes. It's not so great as a game itself, though it has great promise and keeps getting better and better. With this the community is what makes the game good though. There are a lot of roleplayers attracted to it.

Table top RPGs are also loads of fun but the downside is they take so long, require a bunch of friends and a good Dungeon Master. I've rarely had the chance to participate in them but the few times I did it was fun.

Well I'm going to stop babbling now and sit back to see if there are others with similar interests here. Or with questions?

As far as Tabletop goes, I prefer either the White Wolf system of games, BESM, D&D or DC Heros (west end edition, not the new mayfair crap). Oh I also liked Rifts. Rifts was cooool. Here let me rip off a chunk of ley-line and whip your punk ass with it. *evil grin*

As far as video game RPGs, I'd have to say my favorite, atleast for overall game wise, is FF7. However, for character depth and pure addiction value, its FF6/3 hands down. Other series I like are the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors series, DOA, SoulCalibur, and Front Mission. Yay for MEGA mech DESTRUCTION!!

As for MMOs, I will not pay to play. Ever. Thats why I like games like, Silkroad Online, or Knight Online. I don't play either of those anymore btw, because I found a nifty new game called Shaiya. I've also played RF Online, Archlord, Last Chaos, Hero Online, Ran Online, Survival Project, and a whole slew of other ones. I'd have to say that Survival Project was my favorite though. I was very deeply saddened when E-Games pulled it off their servers and retired it.

Oh, I also have a mild obsession with Digimon RPs and .Hack RPs, board based only. I even made my own digimon for a board I used to RP on.

EDIT: I almost forgot, I also used to play on MUDs a.k.a. Multi-User Dungeons, using the Zmud and Gmud programs. Gods I feel old...

Almost everyone thinks FF 7 is the best one out there. Personally I missed a large part of the FF games and went from 5 to 8, the latter I consider the best one out of the bunch. Anything after FF 10 disappointed me enormously.

Dynasty warriors is a great series of games as well but I'd call that pure hack & slash. Nonetheless, loads of fun.

The MMO's you mentioned are mostly familiar but I honestly never saw much positive in them. Games like Silkroad, Knight and most other Online spawns came over as very unoriginal to me. It's just the same concept over and over. Kill things, gain a new skill every few levels and some new equipment every few levels. I get bored easily when I don't have an exciting storyline or huge diversity to explore around in :P

I do agree with not wanting to pay monthly fees for those games .. the only one that I did cave in at was Star Wars Galaxies because I'm a sucker for the Star Wars universe. :P Sometimes I indulge myself with a month subscription. Anything else I'd never pay for but luckily there are more and more free alternatives coming.

I'm going to have to try Planeshift. You guys are like, the fifth and sixth people I know who play it and say its pretty good.

Zan: What? No MUDing for you? Come on, I know your as old as me at least. Or am I the oldest person on a board again...? I hate it when that happens.

Hehe, I'm 24 so I'm old enough to have done it but for some reason just never got dragged into MUDing.

Planeshift used to be a MUD years ago but it evolved into a 3D MMORPG with emphasis on the RPG part. Another fun thing about it is that it's constantly being developed and you get to see new features, maps, items and skills appear while you play.

*facepalms* I AM older than you. Crap. I'm 26. *looks around* Is there anyone here older than me? I hate when I'm the oldest on a board, cuz then everyone comes to me for advice about crap.

I'll definitely have to check out Planeshift then. I saw it advertised on a MMO listing site at one point, but never got around to clicking on it.

Hmm, then you might be the oldest one around here. :P I'll try not to come to you for advice though!

Oh and if you ever get to playing Planeshift do let us know. I'm a Warlord there and my army always needs fresh troops :D Nah, seriously. Feel free to come to Black_Rose or me with questions. The game does have a pretty steep learning curve that can scare beginning players away. It's not always like your usual game.

Yeah and when you get into it it's worth it. Very time consuming in a good way :P

As for advice..you won't catch me doing that and I'm 6 years younger than you :P

Since I'm technologically challenged, must say only game I've played RPG is video games.

Of course, FF7 & 8 are my fave's. 8 liked over 7, cause I got interested and finished it first and I love Squall. He's so cool.

Liked Legend of Dragoon, though was hard hitting those squares until you got used to it. Had to time it all right and everything. I like games which challenge the mind ^_^

Online RPGing, I never took to. Haven't tried, but trying to make a character up, is like trying to write a story based on me. For some reason, unable to do so. Besides, keys on keyboard, is harder for me to play with than playing with controller.

As for you being oldest, Xil, I wouldn't worry about it. most here are far older than they are. We are wise oranges, don't ya know? ;)

Yes well, its a well known fact that physical age has a more direct affect on mental and emotional maturity than soul age does. Its unfortunately how the human body works. And despite what we all say to the contrary, we are all still, sadly, human.

Legend of Dragoon was the first RPG I played that had a timing based combat system. Its was definitely hard to get used to. But after you got the hang of it, it was a breeze...Up until the last boss on the second disk.
I kind of wish they would make a second one though.

Lunar was another good series of games. Silver Star Story Complete I never got to play, but I own Eternal Blue so I'm happy. I've also played one of the handheld games they made, but can't remember which one.

*Smiles* Not always. Especially when you hang out with people who's lives sometimes predate this one based on past lives. Adults before our parents became adults. LOL

*Grins* Besides, know plenty older than you and wouldn't think of asking them for advice, Oi, I can just imagine their words of wisdom. Drink, be polygamous and all your problems shall be solved. ROFL

I think it'd be cool to see a second one, with updated graphics. Good heavens, played that game today and the dragons looked like overgrown praying mantis. LOL

Do you mean Lunar Legend? or another one? I was obsessed with one called Lunar Legend for months till I beat it.

Took months cause I moved a whole lot between two states. :P
